I photograph people for a living, mostly in offices, on campuses and in the field.
I've been doing it in Cairo for 22 years. In that time I've made portraits for BP, Maersk, the British Council and the American University in Cairo — and for a great many people who had never been photographed properly before and were quietly dreading it.
That second group is the one I think about most. A good headshot isn't a matter of equipment. It's a matter of getting someone comfortable enough, quickly enough, that they forget the camera for the half-second that matters. Most of my job is conversation.
Photography has been my hobby and my passion since middle school. The first point-and-shoot I owned made me the official photographer for the school wall magazine. At university I got my first SLR and started an online group for photography enthusiasts in Egypt — photo walks, and eventually exhibitions.
